Wolvercote Loop
We had a good turnout for April’s trip paddling the Wolvercote Loop in Oxford. The original plan to paddle the Thames from Cricklade had to be postponed due to the high flow rates. It felt like déjà vu after our previous trip to the Dart was cancelled due to the snow! The Wolvercote Loop was an ideal alternative due to much of the route being on the Oxford Canal and therefore unaffected by the flow.
The Wolvercote Loop is an interesting route passing the canal side communities and historic Jericho Wharf before heading north into more open countryside. After a lunch stop at the excellent Plough Inn at Wolvercote the group continued along the canal to its junction with Dukes Cut. This man made channel connects the canal to the Thames just above Kings Lock completing the loop. A quick return along the river aided by the flow took us back to the starting point at Port Meadow.
This was an enjoyable alternative to the planned Cricklade trip which has already been rescheduled for May.
